After the 2008 financial collapse and the WikiLeaks banking blockade, parliament unanimously backed the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative (IMMI) in 2010 — a mandate to pull the strongest press-freedom, source-protection and anti-censorship provisions from every legal system on Earth into one jurisdiction. Hosting lawful-but-unpopular speech in Iceland is not a loophole. It is the stated policy.
On data: Iceland sits in the EEA, not the EU, and applies its own GDPR-equivalent (Act No. 90/2018) through Persónuvernd — aimed at data collectors, not publishers.
